Keeping it well

Fabric care

Handmade cloth rewards a little attention and punishes neglect.

Silk and zari

Dry clean only. Store folded in muslin — never plastic, which traps moisture — away from direct light. Refold along a different line every few months so the zari does not crease and crack in the same place.

Never hang a heavy saree on a metal rod. The weight pulls the weave and the metal can stain the zari.

Cotton and mulmul

Hand wash separately in cold water with a mild detergent. Dry in shade, not direct sun. Steam iron on the reverse to protect any surface embroidery.

Natural dyes

First wash separately in cold salted water, which helps set the colour. Natural-dye pieces soften and lighten a little with use — that is the material behaving correctly, not fading.

Velvet and heavy embroidery

Dry clean only. Hang velvet on a padded hanger rather than folding it flat, and store embroidered hems face-up, layered with tissue.
